Texture

People often use texture for the width of each strand: fine, medium, or coarse. Some also use it for how straight or curly hair is.

Density

Density is how many strands grow on your scalp. Low density hair shows more scalp.

Porosity

Porosity is a term stylists use for how easily hair takes in and holds water.

How they affect volume

Fine hair can go flat under heavy products, whatever its density. Light products and lifting the roots as you dry can help.

Hair type charts

You may see hair types described by numbers and letters, from fine and straight to thick and tightly coiled. They are a starting point, not a rule.
