The rule: how oily or dirty it gets

The AAD says to wash your hair based on how often it gets dirty or oily.

Oily scalp, straight or fine hair

If you have straight hair and an oily scalp, the AAD says you may want to shampoo every day. Oil at the roots can make fine hair look flat.

Dry, textured, curly, or thick hair

The AAD says to shampoo when needed, at least once every 2 to 3 weeks.

Flakes

The AAD lists not shampooing often enough as one common reason for flakes, along with not using the right conditioner, oil, or scalp moisturizer.

Between washes

Dry shampoo can absorb some oil at the roots between washes. It does not replace washing. Dry shampoo
